Care & Maintenance.

All of our aluminium joinery products are fully tested to ensure compliance with the NZBC. But proper care and maintenance is essential to preserving the appearance and performance of aluminium joinery, hardware, and glazing.

With over 20 years of expertise in aluminium frame and glass products, we provide expert advice and practical tips to ensure your aluminium doors and windows remain in excellent condition for years to come.

During Construction.

Protect surfaces during building construction to prevent damage. Cement-based products, welding spatter, and other debris can harm surface finishes, so it’s crucial to keep aluminium door and window frames covered until construction is complete.

After construction, clean any debris or dust from inside sills to ensure drainage holes remain unblocked. This is particularly important for doorways that were frequently used during the build.

Regular Cleaning and Maintenance.

Cleaning your aluminium door and window frames every three months is recommended. In coastal, marine, or industrial environments, more frequent cleaning is necessary.

Use a soft brush with mild liquid detergent in warm water, followed by a rinse with fresh water. Avoid abrasive tools such as steel wool, scrapers, scouring liquids, or aggressive solvents and thinners, as these can damage the surface finish.

The cleaning process should also include removing any debris from door tracks to maintain proper drainage.

If powdercoated aluminium door and window frames become scratched or damaged, Dulux repair kits are available in most colours. Spray cans are ideal for larger scuffs, while dabsticks work best for small scratches or chips. For weathered areas, Dulux Gloss Up—a light-to-medium cutting cream—can help restore gloss finishes.

Hardware Care.

Regular maintenance of joinery hardware is crucial to ensure durability and functionality.

Powder-coated hardware should be cleaned using a wet sponge or soft brush with warm water and mild detergent, followed by a rinse with fresh water.

Plated hardware requires a gentler approach—avoid detergent as it may damage the finish. Instead, clean it with a wet sponge only.

Stainless steel hardware needs regular cleaning to prevent rust spots, as even the highest grades can develop corrosion. Use a mildly abrasive cleaner and rinse thoroughly with fresh water. For heavy corrosion, a Scotch-Brite™ hand pad or a specialised product like 3M® Stainless Steel Cleaner and Polish can restore its finish.

Glass Care.

Glass is a delicate material that can be easily scratched or damaged.

Only use cleaning solutions specifically designed for glass. Start by soaking the glass to loosen dirt so that it lifts easier, then apply a mild, non-abrasive cleaner uniformly across the surface. Be sure to rinse with fresh water to remove all residues, as cleaning solutions left behind can permanently mark the glass.
